This is the story of the Chestnut family and the Second American Civil War. It is told by the lone survivor of the family, Benjamin, which centers around his Aunt, Sarat. The book covers the last quarter of the 21st century and skips forward to the late 22nd century.

In the book, the Chestnut family is living, in 2074 Louisiana. Climate change had washed away all of the great east coast cities, Boston, Providence, New York City, and Washington DC, in addition to states like Rhode Island, Delaware, New Jersey and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Florida was gone as was much of the Gulf coast. New Orleans, Houston, Mobile, Biloxi, Galveston, all drown by the effects of climate and water.

In war, there are no heroes. Only martyr’s and survivors. The Chestnut family, living a hardscrabble life ‘by the Mississippi Sea’ in 2073, soon are displaced after their father, hoping to move the family…
