As a white man who grew up in Detroit in the 60s, and lived there as an adult for nine years in the mid-80's-to early 90s, I was so opposed to that incinerator that the FBI started a file on me. I was glad when they shut it down. The Detroit Free Press did a good job about ZIP Code 48217 earlier this year, about all the poor people, of all color, who simply can’t move and the ‘gentrification’ efforts going on there. Marathon, 25 years ago, announced it was going to close and move their refinery, but Governor Engler stepped in and gave them a tax abatement. And now that Michigan is a Right-to-Work (for less) State, Marathon is going to be a union-free shop by 2023, if not sooner. So, much like the UAW, the rules will change.
