China Doesn’t Care Because They Hold All The Cards — And Money
In a little over two months, the Olympics start in Beijing.
(Wait, weren’t the Olympics just held? Yes. I’ll get to that. Read on.)
First off, lets get the formalities out of the way. Starting February 4, the XXIV Winter Olympics will begin in Beijing. The athletes and delegations will march in and the cauldron will be lit and the speed skaters, hockey players, biathletes, skiers, curlers, ski jumpers and figure skaters will all have their shot at Olympic glory.
It will also mark the first time a city has hosted both the Summer and Winter Games. The Games also take place on the 50th anniversary of President Nixon’s visit, ‘opening’ China to the greater world.
But, as we’ve all witnessed over the past 50 years, China only lets the world see what they want the world to see. It has been two years since COVID-19 first appeared in Wuhan and we still don’t know as much as we could, or should. The pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, with up to 50,000 arrested. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, as well as VICE News have documented these, as well as other instances of the crackdown of dissidents within the country and abroad.
But the worst human rights violation occurring in China has been the ongoing Uyghur genocide. Ethnic cleansing is nothing new. Ask any of your Jewish friends or neighbors. Or Native American/First Nation People. But the Chinese are bringing it to a whole new level.
