In May of 1972, George Wallace got shot, the day after, he won the primaries in both Michigan and Maryland. Had he not been shot, he, not McGovern, would have faced Nixon in the fall. There went the 'Southern Strategy,' out the door. Also, you can draw a line from Wallace to Reagan to Giuliani to Trump.
