In the 1980's, those of us who were disabled (I have Cerebral Palsy) were called 'Handicapped success stories,' if we were going to college, working, winning medals or marathons in our spiffy, new 'sports' wheelchairs. Even living 'independently' was celebrated. But we still faced pity and scorn. I didn't watch the RNC, not one minute of it, but a stunt like that won't win him any votes and certainly not acceptance among the disabled community.
