It's the word 'Union.' South of the Ohio River, that conjures up stories from 160 years ago. Also, since deregulation started in the late 70s, the average worker-to-boss ratio has gone from 1:35 to 1:350. Reagan illegally fired the air traffic controllers and that signaled the weakening of unions in America.
Also, tips. I have a longtime friend who's also a server at the local sports bar. I've known her since that place opened, always given her great tips (as have my friends). She's 46, looks 30 and pre-COVID, made $100,000 a year. Now, she stays at home, looks after her 13-year-old daughter and babysits her sister's kids. I chat with her, we text back and forth, the whole routine. But I doubt she'll ever return to work. It stinks, because she was the best server I've ever known and a good friend to boot.
