John Wayne (b. Marion Morrison) wasn’t much of an actor. As several film historians have noted, most of his roles were one-dimensional and others had more lines. In real life, he wasn’t much of a father or husband. Yet, his later roles (Rio Bravo, Sons of Katie Elder, True Grit ) were somewhat an extension of the ‘Silent Majority,’ middle-American values, even though Wayne (and later, Reagan) hardly exemplified them.
