LeMay was also George Wallace's Vice Presidential nominee in 1968 and was part of the last third party candidacy to win a state. Wallace won five. However, LeMay effectively snuck Wallace's chances by advocating for the nuclear option to be used against North Vietnam. Wallace might have thrown the election into the House of Representatives had he picked off a few other states that Nixon won. "Bombs away," indeed. He was the inspiration for Col. Ripper in Dr. Strangelove.
