Remember, too, the only time since FDR in 1936 where 'white America' voted Democratic was 1964, for LBJ and just barely. Clinton won two elections without cracking 50% because Ross Perot split the white vote and Nixon won in '68 because Wallace ran as an independent. Had Wallace not been shot, it's likely he would have won the '72 Democratic nomination - what an election that would have been!
