The Dam Is Cracking
How Mitt Romney might save America, maybe
A couple weeks ago, I was out with a friend for lunch and we started talking about the Orange Mistake and I mentioned the three candidates running against him — who have no fucking chance to grab the nomination away from Mr. 90% — and summed it up this way:
“It’s a sad state of affairs when you pin your hopes on Mitt Romney.”
Yes, that Mitt Romney. A man so over-privileged that over-privileged doesn’t even come close to adequately describing him. A man so oblivious to the obvious, he makes ignorance seem like a virtue. Someone so rich that he refused his inheritance, yet still can’t find his basic humanity. Shallow is even inadequate as well. So is an empty suit. To be fair, empty suits envy him.
And yet…“ROMNEY IS THE PRESSURE POINT IN THE IMPEACHMENT PROCESS,” glared the headline from Vanity Fair last night, “MITT WON’T PRIMARY TRUMP — BUT HE’S TRYING TO BRING HIM DOWN.’’
First of all, I like Gabriel Sherman. He is a well-informed, well-sourced journalist. And yes, there may be cracks in the GOP’s ‘allegiance,’ but to count on Romney to convince 20 or more of his Republican colleagues to vote to convict him of whatever the House impeaches him on to remove him from office is highly improbable.
I have no doubt there are donors who want him to ‘primary’ the so-called president*, but I also doubt there would be a ‘Republicans for (fill-in your name here)’, similar to 1972’s ‘Democrats for Nixon,’ led by Texas…
