The Ghosts Return

Once again, our founding document, used and misused for purposes both good and not-so-good since 1787, is dug out of storage and understood correctly by those in power.

Whether it works or not is to be determined. But, with the brazen, out-in-the-open, worse-than-Nixon could ever dream of criminality not seen in history, the House majority finally got the hint and opened formal impeachment hearings against Donald John Trump.

The Hour of The Founders is, once again, upon us.

“There comes a time when you have to be moved by the spirit of history to take action to protect and preserve the integrity of our nation. I believe, I truly believe, the time to begin impeachment proceedings against this president has come. To delay or to do otherwise would betray the foundation of our democracy.” — John Lewis.

Not just any John Lewis, but a man who knew Martin and Robert, who walked across the Edmund Pettis Bridge and almost died because of it, a man who, when he speaks, people listen.

“Impeachment is coming and this Congress had better be ready.”

Those words, spoken by Thomas P. ‘Tip’ O’Neill, are as true today as when he spoke them in late 1973. Even then, they had to be moved like a teenager after eating Taco Bell with Colt 45 at 3 am. The political historian Walter Karp recalled a decade later, in 1984, the glacial pace in which that Congress inched towards impeaching Nixon:
