You need to read Jane Mayer's book "Dark Money." There's a lot on the Devos's and Amway. I went to a couple of those recruitment 'seminars' in the 90s. They gave the same B.S. that you described. I met some decent people there, but most were disillusioned about what had happened since they graduated high school or college. It was all, "we're rich beyond your dreams of avarice and you can be, too." Of course, there's a catch. There always is. You had to pay them to become a 'distributor.' They finally got me to sign up and I paid $60 (about $175 today) and sold Zilch. Well, through a few choice words and a threatening call from my lawyer, I got my money back.
A few years later, probably 2000-01, I saw a guy who used to attend those shit-fests with me and I asked him if he was still doing it. He said, no, he got married and got a real job.
